The Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, based in Smithfield in Johnston County NC, is strategically located in a diverse community which is experiencing unprecedented business and residential growth. Johnston County is located on the East Coast of the United States and sits just minutes from the technology hub of Raleigh, NC. Our location and probusiness climate positions us to be one of the fastest growing counties in one of the nation’s fastest growing regions. We’re halfway between New York and Florida, and just 2 hours from the Atlantic Ocean. A four-hour drive to the north puts you in Washington, D.C., and a three-hour drive to the southwest puts you in the financial center of Charlotte, N.C.

The Organization
The Triangle East Chamber of Commerce services a very dynamic and growing region. Our Chamber is strategically
located in a diverse community which is experiencing unprecedented business and residential growth. The Triangle East Chamber now represents 9 communities in the county: Selma, Smithfield, Pine Level, Princeton, Archer Lodge, Kenly, Wilson Mills, Micro, and Cleveland. The Chamber has carefully crafted a unified mission for our communities while also recognizing the individual uniqueness of each. Whatever the next challenges are for the region, our members can count on the Chamber to serve as a resource for them. The success of our Chamber is based on the input and support of our members and communities.
The chamber currently has a budget of $330,000 and serves over 500+ members and has a full-time staff of four.

The Position
The ideal candidate for this position will have a passion for what they do and will be a visible community leader with
strong advocacy skills. They must be able to work effectively with a wide variety of people and organizations in a
collaborative manner. The candidate must have a strong focus on external relationships and partnership building. Our new President/CEO must be someone who inspires broad vision and strategic planning, organizes, and coordinates functional and leadership activities, implements and coordinates programs and activities to promote business growth and performs all related duties necessary for success.

This President/CEO will be the leader of our 500+ member Chamber. The chosen candidate will manage both staff and
volunteers to achieve the goals of the organization. The CEO will report directly to the Chamber Board of Directors. The President/CEO will be the driving force behind all efforts of the Chamber.

The President/CEO will conduct a disciplined annual planning process, in partnership with the Board of Directors and community partners, to develop and implement an action plan that will allow our community to connect, grow, and prosper. This will include an annual plan outlining the Chamber's programs and activities to maximize community and revenue growth and achieve the annual goals set by our team.

Our new President/CEO will develop positive non-partisan relationships with elected and appointed government and
agency officials, as well as all represented entities of the chamber industry, both within and outside the county. They will establish and maintain relationships with the various media outlets to enhance business development throughout the region.

The new President/CEO will meet regularly with the chamber team to strategize and prepare our roadmap for business and community growth. They will be responsible for hiring, annual performance reviews, training, and development of chamber staff.

The ideal candidate must have or develop an understanding of a chamber of commerce, in addition to a background in
community development, event planning and marketing. They must possess outstanding written and oral
communication skills. They must be able to network effectively and work well with volunteers. As the leader of the Chamber, excellent public relations, coalition building, fostering strategic partnerships, and experience advocating are imperative to this role.


  • Strongly preferred bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of five years of successful chamber or non-profit management experience or equivalent
    management experience, demonstrating progressively greater responsibility in each position.
  • Strong financial management experience is required and previous experience managing a like-sized budget is a bonus.
  • U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management designation or Certified Chamber/Association Executive designation is considered a plus.
  • Economic Development experience/knowledge is a bonus.
  • Residency in Johnston County NC is required, no later than six months from date of employment.
  • Some travel, industry conferences, evening and weekend hours will be a requirement for this position.
  • Competencies required are conceptual thinking, role awareness, good judgment, empathy, ability to lead others, initiative, and short and long-range planning.
